Wildflowers and Butterflies - A Picture to Print Photography 1-2-1 Workshop

23rd April, 2020

A "Picture to Print" Photography Workshop on Wildflowers and Butterflies in the Peak District National Park - 1-2-1 Course

Currently the website is not accepting bookings until 1st Feb!!

Course PDF Test link to AWS

As the title says, this one day course will take you on a journey where we will go out in the Peak District and visit various locations to learn how to take quality pictures of wildflowers and butterflies, then we will return to my workshop to process your favourite image of the day and you can print it out up to A2 in size, mount it on foamboard and take it home with you as a momento of the day to mount proudly on your wall.

This course is suitable for beginners and intermediate photographers. However, rather than running it as a group, I run these days with a single client so I can dedicate to you my whole personal attention, and we can tailer the day much more to your requirements. So, if you fancy taking some landscape shots, or spending longer on post-processing - we can. The day is yours to do with as you wish.

We will have a relaxed but packed day of activity visiting some of my secret and best locations, including my own land and gardens where we have some beautiful and rare wildflowers.

Please note - Butterflies are fickle and of course will not likely fly if it is raining. Although this course is not strictly weather dependent, on some days it may be that we see less butterflies. However we will see plenty of wildflowers. As this is a 1-2-1 day - I may choose not to run this day if I think you won't get the best from it and we will reschedule another day.

When booking, you will receive a PDF document via email with some further detailed information about the day, including what to bring, food, and what to expect in terms of physical demand. We aren't climing Snowdon, but we will be out in the wild where there is often little or no phone reception. We will also be carrying equiment and bags (and yourselves) to get to our destinaitons and some are a mile from the road. If you are reasonably fit and active and can walking on rough ground and up and down slopes for a few miles with a daypack and your camera equipment then you should be fine.

What will you learn?

  • Where to look for wildflowers and butterflies
  • Environmental impact
  • Useful Equipment beyond the camera
  • How to approach butterflies
  • Identifying butterflies and wildflowers
  • Useful resources
  • Camera settings and techniques
  • Taking basic photographs
  • Improvers techniques
  • The importance of light and angles
  • Basic image processing
  • Basics of printing including colour and tonal balance

What will the day consist of?

We will meet at a predetermined location where you can park your car and where we will have a quick meet and greet, before transferring your bag and gear to my car.
We will head out to our first location and you and I will have plenty of opportunity to chat and get to know each other. Continuing this when we arrive we will have time to get up to speed so I can find out your level of knowledge and what you want to get from the day.

Depending on the weather and the circumstances we may go to several locations around the Peak.
We will break at a convenient point for lunch.

Once our photographic field session is complete we will all come back to my workshop to allow us to load some of your best photographs onto the PC and we will go through some basic editing using Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. I will endeavour to show you some quick basic alterations to maximise and balance your pictures.
If you wish to learn more about this side of photography, we can balance the day to give you a few hours more in the Workshop. We can also pop out into my own fields and garden to do some shooting there and come back. Lots of flexibility.

We will then prepare the best one for printing and I will show you the key aspects of print prepation.

We will then print out your work and I will show you how we mount it on a foamboard back with wall mounts so you can put it on your wall once at home to dazzle and impress your firends and family.

We will have a debrief and final chat before I take you back to your vehicle.

If you wish to have more than one picture printed out, we can print and mount extras. Each one costs £20 extra.

What you will need to bring...

Camera Equipment Essentials
(This is a guide to the minimum. Please bring what ever kit you would normally use

  • Your camera and ideally an instruction manual that came with it if you have it.
  • A tripod if you have one.
  • Spare batteries and spare storage cards for your camera
  • If your camera has interchangeable lenses, I would recommend a zoom or telephoto lens, plus a macro lens if you have one. However at the very least you will need a normal walkabout lens ranging from between 24mm and 70mm. Contact me if you need any advice beforehand.
  • A cleaning cloth or kit for your lens is useful.
  • A clear plastic sandwich bag big enough to fit your camera and lens in comfortably (in case it rains)
  •  If your camera uses a cable to transfer pictures to your computer, please bring it along too

Clothing and comfort for out in the field:

  • Good serviceable walking boots
  • Warm socks (and a spare are useful)
  • Waterproof and windproof trousers. (You will be on the ground a fair bit)
  • Several warm layers - windproof fleece
  • A good raincoat that is big enough to keep you relatively dry in a downpour.
  • Warm hat and gloves
  • Sitting mat or even a black bin liner - to sit down and use to protect you on the ground.
  • A warm reinforcement layer if you have one. Ideally this is down jacket or very warm coat to wear when you are sitting still.

Also ...

  • For back in the worksop I would recommend that you bring with you a spare set of clothing to wear indoors. You can put them all in a carrier bag and leave them in my car. You will only need them if we get soaked in field. It's not much fun sat around in wet gear once we get back into the warmth of the workshop and editing your pictures.

Additional

  • Food and Drink for your personal use during the day. We may get to a cafe but the likelihood is we will eat our lunch out in the field.
  • Snacks as required.
  • Mobile Phone (although please leave it quiet during the day or on vibrate. We will likely be out of range anyway)
  • Medicine or Personal Items
  • Rucksack to carry this all in when we leave the car.
  • Any other personal equipment you normally take with you.

I am experienced at navigation and we aren't going anywhere where we could get lost anyway. I shall carry a number of emergency items including a First Aid Kit and an Emergency Shelter for Two. I carry a compass, maps, whistle and glucose tablets among other items.

I expect the day to last from approximately 9am to 5pm although we may run on later.

What can you expect from me?

I will devote my time soley to you and this is ideal if you are a true begineer or maybe you want to take your photographs to the next level - the day is yours and although I will have structure and a day-plan - we can vary that to suit your wishes where possible.

It will be a relaxed and friendly day. I always bring my own camera equipment which I will use for demonstration purposes and to show how I approach the subject. Don't worry if your kit isn't the same as mine (I use Sony equipment) - the concepts are transferrable from platform to platform.

I am not an expert on wildflowers, butterflies or the countryside. This is not a flower identification course. However I do know quite a lot and I know the area extremely well indeed. So, you may feel free to ask me any questions you like and I will do my best to answer them.

My approach is very practical and hands-on. This isn't a technical photography course, although we will cover common practices and techniques. I want to teach you how to find subjects, what to avoid, what to focus on, how to get the best from the subject and environment.

I usually carry a few books so we can endeavour to identify things we may find. I also will demonstrate some useful equipment and techniques to use in the field.

I intend to do my best to make sure you have an enjoyable and informative day and arm you with some new techniques with which to go out on your own after the course and take better photographs.

Finally I thank you from the bottom of my heart for choosing Photography by Bones

Thank you
Tony ( Bones)
